A 22-year-old man is in police custody after an elderly woman reported a burglary at her Waiakea residence, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Responding to a 7 p.m. call Sunday, police officers determined an unknown person had entered into the Hilo residence while the woman was away and removed numerous items of jewelry and U.S. currency.

Police recovered the jewelry belonging to the victim on Monday and their investigation led to the arrest of Taylor Kalawe of Keaau. He was taken into custody while the investigation continued.

At 1 p.m. Tuesday, Kalawe was charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $7,000. He remained at the Hilo cellblock pending his initial court appearance, which was scheduled for today.
